A new way of working

I have been working with my glazes, all original recipes, for over 20 years. Being a graphic designer, I have always carefully planned for final results. I used the glazes as a background for images. The glaze needed to be even, perfect, the focus was on the image. This summer, I have made the move away from applying images. I want the form and the glaze to be the stars. I decided to let go of control and to create paintings with glazes.

This past week I played by mixing and matching colors, letting go of results. This practice was about experimenting, and allowing for creativity to flow.

Tomorrow I open up the kiln and discover what became of this new way of working. I’m excited, the results could be a mess, but I am sure I would have learned a lot.

I have layered light glaze colors with deep greys and blues. There are yellows, reds, oranges, indigo on the pieces. The color will show up after the kiln has been fired to 2300F. The firing takes 36 hours, including cool down.

All pieces look pale right after the glaze has been applied. Tomorrow, we will see the transformation. Like magic.
